How to keep your family bed clean and well maintained

A family bed is used for hours every day. It is where you sleep, read, settle down for the night, breastfeed and perhaps even enjoy a late-night snack. Naturally, it collects dust, moisture, hair and the occasional small stain. Fortunately, keeping your family bed clean and well maintained does not require a thorough deep clean every week. What matters most is having a consistent, realistic routine that works for your family. Regular airing, mattress protection and a simple method for changing the sheets can make cleaning easier while helping you care for the bed's materials.

Make changing large sheets easier

A large sheet can be awkward to handle on your own, especially when the bed is close to a wall. Start by clearing the bed completely. Remove pillows, duvets, cuddly toys and any bed skirts to prevent the fabric from catching. If there are two of you, take one long side each. If you are working alone, it is often easier to move from corner to corner rather than trying to fit the entire sheet at once.

  1. Remove the used sheet, then vacuum up any visible hair, crumbs and dust with a clean nozzle.
  2. Find the corners of the sheet before putting it on the bed. This avoids unnecessary lifting and pulling.
  3. Fit the hardest-to-reach corners first, usually those along the wall.
  4. Then fit the corners nearest you and distribute the fabric evenly across the mattress.
  5. Finally, check that the sheet lies flat without pulling the mattress topper out of position.

Care for your mattress topper without damaging it

Your mattress topper is the layer closest to you, so it takes on much of the heat and moisture produced overnight. Let it air whenever you change the bedding. If the manufacturer’s care instructions allow, gently vacuum the surface using low suction and a clean upholstery attachment. For small stains, blot with a well-wrung-out cloth rather than soaking the material. Avoid rubbing vigorously, as this can work the stain deeper into the material and affect the surface.

  • Always check the care label before removing or washing a cover.
  • Never wash the mattress topper core unless the manufacturer explicitly states that it is washable.
  • Make sure a washed cover is completely dry before putting it back on.
  • Use the medium or firm side to suit your current needs, and follow the product instructions when turning the mattress topper over.

Deal with accidents straight away

If there is a spill or night-time accident, first remove the sheet and mattress protector. Then gently blot up the liquid with clean, absorbent cloths. Use only cleaning products permitted by the care instructions, and allow the area to dry and air thoroughly. Do not make the bed while it still feels damp. If moisture or odours keep returning, inspect the bedding, mattress topper, mattresses and the surface beneath them rather than simply covering up the problem.

Ventilation prevents musty odours and moisture build-up

In the morning, pull back the duvets to help heat and moisture escape from the sleeping surface. Air the room regularly too. Changing the sheet is also a good opportunity to leave the mattresses and mattress topper uncovered for a while. At the same time, check for moisture, discolouration or musty odours around the edges and joins, and beneath the mattresses. This is especially important if the bed is in a room with limited air circulation.

  • Avoid making the bed up fully as soon as everyone gets up.
  • Keep enough space clear underneath and around the bed for air to circulate and for cleaning.
  • Wipe away condensation and visible moisture, and investigate the cause if the problem returns.
  • Regularly check hidden areas by the wall and between the bed modules.

Use mattress protectors as your first line of defence

A mattress protector can catch sweat, small stains and accidents before they reach the layers beneath. Choose one that fits the mattress properly without adversely affecting the sleeping surface. It should lie flat without any loose creases. Wash the protector according to its care label, and consider keeping a spare ready if your family often needs quick changes. Check it regularly to make sure it is still intact and working as intended.

What can be washed?

The care label always takes precedence over general advice. Sheets and removable textiles can often be washed, but the temperature, wash cycle and drying method depend on the specific product. Covers should only be removed if the product instructions say they can be. Bed skirts should also be cared for according to their own labels. Do not assume that every part can withstand the same wash cycle simply because it is the same colour. You can find information about the specific products on our pages about custom-sized sheets and FamBed bed skirts.

Caring for the joints, legs and bed bridge

Cleaning also means looking after the parts that hold the bed together. Vacuum carefully around the joints and underneath the bed. Wipe solid surfaces with a soft, slightly damp cloth if the material's care instructions allow. Regularly check that the modules, fittings and legs remain stable, and that the bed bridge is still positioned correctly. If you use a FamBed DIY extension kit with height-adjustable legs and a bed bridge, include this check in your regular cleaning routine. How to extend the life of your bed

There is no single set lifespan for every mattress or bed component. The weight they bear, moisture, ventilation, materials and everyday use all play a part. Look out for persistent indentations, changes in support, damaged covers, loose joints and odours that remain after cleaning and drying. These are signs that a component needs closer inspection and may need replacing. You can learn more about FamBed's modular family beds and reversible mattress topper with medium and firm sides. A simple routine of regular ventilation, washing according to the care label and ongoing checks makes it easier to spot problems early and keep your family bed pleasant to use.
